Circa 1930 Lou Gehrig Large Photograph by George Burke. Extraordinary photographic portrait gets our vote for the most desirable unsigned photo of Gehrig in the collecting hobby. We begin with the notoriety of the artist himself, George Burke, whose soulful photographic work serves as the foremost visual documentation for Depression-era baseball. Burke's virtuosic control of light and shadow establishes his imagery as far more than simple photojournalism, and his talents are on full display here. Next, we report that the dimensions of the presented work are greatly expanded from the typical 4x6" format most commonly seen for Burke. Here we encounter a 7x10" image on an 11x14" mount, the reverse bearing Burke's studio stamp. This impressive oversized format is clearly due to the final and perhaps most compelling attribute of the image, that it was gifted to and owned by the subject himself. The marvelous condition, with light edge wear to the mount barely worth a mention, is the final cherry on top. An absolute masterpiece with profound provenancial appeal.

The Lou Gehrig Collection, Part II.

The noble Iron Horse rides once again, and for the final time within the confines of The Lou Gehrig Collection presented by Heritage Auctions. The incredible offering of personally owned material from the Yankees legend first appeared within our August 2011 "Platinum Night" event. We made sure to hold a few great pieces back for our November auction, and this is one of them. This material was left to the consignor's family by Lou's mother Christina Gehrig upon her passing in the 1950's, and makes its hobby debut here.
