    Description

Circa 1920 Babe Ruth Original News Photograph by Paul Thompson, PSA/DNA Type 1. Perhaps the finest portrait photo we've ever encountered of a young Babe Ruth during his earliest days with the franchise he would come to personify. The remarkable clarity and quality of the 6.5x8.5" image should come as no surprise to educated collectors of vintage baseball photography, as it is the work of esteemed lensman Paul Thompson, whose stamp is found on verso. Even more thrilling is a handwritten pencil notation from Thompson himself, who writes, "The opposing pitcher commences to get nervous--'Babe' enroute to the plate--Batter up." Certainly equal in quality to lot 19536 in our October 2006, a Ruth Red Sox photo achieving a price of $17,925, this personal photographer's copy of one of the Babe's most famous portraits should spark a serious battle among the hobby's top photography collectors. Any condition issues--a chip at lower right and tape at top--are confined to the white border, meaning that a simple matting job would provide a NRMT appearance. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
