    Description

Circa 1920 Andrew "Rube" Foster Cabinet Photograph. Arguably the most significant single figure in the history of Negro League Baseball, Foster began his professional career with the Waco (TX) Yellow Jackets in 1897, going on to establish himself as the greatest African-American pitcher of his age with such celebrated clubs as Leland's Chicago Union Giants and Philadelphia's Cuban X-Giants. His greatest contribution came as an executive, however, serving as president of a newly formed Negro National League in 1920, while remaining owner and manager of the American Giants. Presented here is just the second example of this remarkable cabinet photograph of Foster to reach the auction block in recent years, one of the most coveted photos known in the Negro League collecting hobby. The 3.75x5.5" image area bears the embossed studio stamping of "A.P. Bedou - New Orleans," and is applied to a 7x10" cardboard mount. Two holes punched at the top of the mount, where a string is tied, may or may not be original to the presentation. Edge wear and a bit of staining at lower right do little to distract, and the image itself remains legitimately Mint in condition. Certainly one of the most exciting Negro League offerings of the season, for the cultured collector. Guide Value or Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.
