Circa 1918 Ty Cobb Military Photograph, PSA/DNA Type 1. In 1918, after hitting .382 and winning his eleventh batting title, Ty Cobb enlisted in the Chemical Corps branch of the U.S. Army where he was assigned to the Gas and Flame Division. Given the rank of captain, he served under Branch Rickey, along with Christy Matthewson and George Sisler. The then-lifetime .370 hitter was stationed in Chaumont, France where he spent a little over two months before receiving his honorable discharge. While some players, like Christy Mathewson, came back from their service with serious ailments and afflictions, Cobb returned home virtually unscathed. Nobody in their right mind was about to spray Ty Cobb with mustard gas.

The approximately 5x8" image depicts Cobb in full dress uniform standing in front of a building and looking more like a movie star than a ballplayer. The borders are a bit uneven as the image was trimmed but this slight imperfection would quickly vanish when framed. More importantly, the clarity and surface quality are spectacular, especially when you consider its century-plus vintage. Full LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
