One of the sport's most recognizable images

Circa 1913 "Shoeless Joe" Jackson Original News Photograph by Conlon, PSA/DNA Type 1. This definitive portrait of Shoeless Joe finds the premier batsman in the uniform of the Cleveland Naps in the years before a trade to the Chicago White Sox would begin his sad path to infamy. Arguably the most recognizable image of the disgraced legend, the work is unmistakably that of renowned lensman Charles Conlon, whose archive of photographic negatives made international news last August when Heritage auctioned the collection for nearly $1.8 million.

The quality of this Jackson study provides insight into the rationale for that record result, as Conlon skillfully captures the gritty spirit of the Dead Ball Era in the ragged top of Jackson's cap, and the deep crow's feet on his cheeks documenting the hardships of a life not yet thirty years in the making. He holds his fabled Black Betsy at the ready, eyes locked on the camera's lens.

The image has been trimmed to its current dimensions of 5x8" in size, the alteration a common and entirely acceptable result of its intended purpose--reproduction in published periodicals. Otherwise the image presents without any distractions worthy of note. Verso bears Conlon's handwritten editorial markings, including his own last name that functions as an autograph of sorts. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
