Description
Circa 1890 Original Photograph Of Fingerless Baseball Gloves Used For Advertising. Presented is an exceptional and early photograph of the very rare and iconic fingerless style baseball gloves. In the late 1800s, players began using simple leather gloves with minimal padding, primarily to protect their hands rather than to aid in catching. By the early 20th century, gloves became more structured, with webbing added between the thumb and fingers to help secure the ball. Over time, specialized designs emerged for each position-catcher's mitts, first baseman's gloves, infield and outfield models-each tailored for specific fielding needs. But offered here is a relic of the first generation of gloves, when the game was more primitive and rugged.Original photograph on board is a sizeable 7.5" x 6.25". Used for product advertisement in the 1890s, editing marks are present from professional use with a few tack holes. The piece is in excellent overall condition with crisp focus, and would be an eye appealing addition to an early baseball collection.
