    Circa 1890 Henry Chadwick Oversized Period Photograph. In his biography of Harry Wright, author Chris Devine ranked Henry Chadwick as the most important figure in nineteenth-century baseball. In addition to being one of the earliest newspaper journalists to write about baseball, Chadwick also authored the quintessential baseball guide of the 1860's, and his esteemed standing in the baseball universe earned him a much deserved spot on the rules committee.

    Chadwick helped lay foundation for the in-game scoring system and box score, introduced "K" to indicate a strikeout, promoted the overhand pitch, and pushed for a uniform distance between the mound and home plate. He also envisioned The National Pastime as a noble institution that should represent the very best of American culture and was one of the first to speak of "the best interests of baseball." As a historian, he maintained that baseball originated from the English game of rounders, which we know today to be true. Chadwick is still the only journalist enshrined in the Hall.

    Studio portrait of Chadwick at a desk is a period photograph measuring 9.75x12". PSA/DNA cannot evaluate mounted photos but they believe it dates from the 1880s or 1890s. It has been in the Chadwick family since it was issued, handed down from generation to generation, and was consigned to this auction by a great-great-granddaughter of Henry Chadwick.
