    Description

Circa 1887 Louis Biebeuer Cabinet Photo by F. Gutekunst Offered is a very scarce circa 1887 cabinet card of a Philadelphia Athletics player identified as "Bauer" and "2nd base" on the reverse. To the best of our research we have been unable to find a "Bauer" from that team but we did find "Louis Bierbauer" who played 2nd base for the Athletics that season. based on the few photos we have been able to find we are confident this is Bierbauer but can not confirm to 100% certainty. It is because of the lack of 100% identification that SGC would not slab the card. They have confirmed that the card is unaltered and could receive a numerical grade. The card itself is in close to excellent condition with some light surface soiling, clipped corners, pencil notation on the reverse and the hand written "Bauer" notation in black ink on the front. That large brown area in the upper right is in the photo. The central image has some fading but his cap, face and collar areas have retained nice contrast and detail. A rare 19th century portrait of a relatively obscure player.
