    Description

1954 Willie Mays "The Catch" Original News Photograph. "Running at top speed with his back to the plate, New York Giant center fielder Willie Mays gets under a 450-foot poke off bat of Cleveland first baseman Vic Wertz..." begins the full paper caption affixed to the back of this, one of the most famous and widely reproduced images of the post-war game. Make no mistake though, this is a rare and important Type 1 image, the first we've seen of a play so remarkable that it is recognized as simply, "The Catch." The 7x9" original exhibits some wrinkling and a small tear at left border, but the importance of the piece overrides such condition concerns, and the visual effect is not particularly distracting anyhow.
