Description

1948 "The Babe Bows Out" Original Photograph by Nat Fein with Handwritten Notes on Verso. It's the most recognizable baseball photograph in history, and the only one to have earned the Pulitzer Prize for its brilliance. Though the subject is the game's greatest figure, the theme is something much larger, of glory days past, and the ruthlessness of time and death, which spare not even our heroes from its inevitability. For those uninitiated in the photography collecting hobby, the most desirable and valuable prints are images developed by the photographer himself in the immediate era of their capture, and such is the case here. Fein has autographed the 7x9" print at lower right on obverse, and then some years later penned a brief history of the piece on verso, which is visible with the special framing. An inch long wrinkle in the sky above the Stadium is overstated with a mere mention, but is noted in the interest of full disclosure. Also included is a photocopy of a 1999 letter to Swirsky from Fein discussing his idea to shoot Ruth from the back, and the thrill of winning the Pulitzer, and a second letter that accompanied the listed photo. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autograph on photo). Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph on photo).
