1948 Satchel Paige Original Photograph Used for 1949 Bowman Card, PSA/DNA Type 1.He's remembered for saying, "Don't look back--somebody might be gaining on you," but there's little danger that any Satchel Paige original photograph from his "rookie" season will catch up to the provided specimen. It was a tragedy that Paige wasn't allowed to toe the rubber against Major League Hall of Famers during his formative years on the mound. Rather, he dominated the competition in the Negro Leagues and matchups against the likes of Ruth, Gehrig or even Cobb remain a dream. In 1948, when Paige finally was able to play in the Major Leagues, he was forty-one and nearing the end of a long career. The fastball didn't quite have the same zip and the curve didn't move to the extent it did earlier. We scoured the auction archives and could not find another like this original 8.25x10" imagery of the unforgettable moundsman.
The crystal clear photo was used by Bowman when it designed Paige's rookie card - #224 in the 1949 set. This photo was also used for the Indians photo pack set and JCPenney handout. Even in his forties, Paige looks in control and as sure as ever. Paige made his Major League debut on July 9, 1948 and the photo has a date stamp of "Aug 28 1948." Normal storage/handling wear is visible on front, but there are no rips. The lower right and upper left corners have the slightest hint of gloss missing. "Leroy Satchel Paige" is written in pencil on back (underlined) and joined by the date stamp, "Cleveland Ohio" stamp and mailing label. If there was an everlasting photo of Satchel Paige from his all-too-brief career in the Major Leagues, it is provided within this catalog listing. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
