1939 Lou Gehrig's Streak Ends Wire Photograph. Heartbreaking image pictures the Iron Horse putting on a brave face as he turns over first base duties to young Babe Dahlgren. Paper caption on verso reads, "Larrupin' Lou Steps Down. Detroit, Mich. Lou Gehrig voluntarily laid down his bat today and ended his long continuous reign over the initial sack. Lou (Left) after playing 2,130 consecutive games, gave up his post to Babe Dahlgren here May 2nd, Full Credit Line (Acme) 5/2/39." Monumentally important photo has insignificant editor's ink marks on Dahlgren's pants, but otherwise presents as NRMT. Measures 7x9" in size.
