    Description

1939 Lou Gehrig "Dugout Steps" Original News Photograph Taken During His First Game After the Streak, PSA/DNA Type 3. "It would not be fair to the boys, to Joe or to the baseball public for me to try going on." - Lou Gehrig, May 2, 1939.

You've surely seen this image before as it is one of the most famous of Gehrig ever produced, taken on May 2, 1939, the day The Iron Horse benched himself after his record 2,130 consecutive games played.

Shot from inside the Yankees dugout, we see Columbia Lou sitting on the dugout steps (with his right forearm resting on the very top step), as he gazes out over Briggs Stadium in Detroit and watches his teammates warmup for their game versus the Tigers. The 1939 baseball centennial patch is clearly visible on his left sleeve and the calm, serene expression on his face doesn't reflect the emotion that he must have been harboring inside. What makes this particular photograph truly special, though, is that we can see other players and the stadium, as most versions of this image are tightly cropped and picture just Gehrig.

The verso has two "Received Engraving Room, 1939 May 2" date stamps, which were affixed on the very day the photo was taken. There are three corner chips, two pinholes, a trimmed right border, and some small dings, but the image itself remains clean, powerful. and iconic. Accompanied by an original newspaper clipping (4x6.75"), dated "May 3-1939," that features this very image of Gehrig (cropped) in the dugout. Measures 8x9.75". LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 3.
