1939 Babe Ruth Embraces Lou Gehrig after "Luckiest Man" Speech Original News Photograph, PSA/DNA Type 1. "They didn't get along," fellow pinstriped Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri explained. "Gehrig thought Ruth was a big-mouth, and Ruth thought Gehrig was cheap. They were both right." Though they shared a preternatural ability to slug home runs, these leading assassins of Murderer's Row were polar opposites in personality. Ruth was boisterous and gregarious, Gehrig quiet and private. After Ruth was dismissed from the Bronx at the close of the 1934 season, the pair's relationship was whittled down to a few spring training shots in 1935, and then complete estrangement.

But the huge-hearted Ruth insisted on taking the field with Gehrig on July 4, 1939, when the Iron Horse delivered a speech nearly as famous as Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. New York Herald-Tribune journalist Rud Rennie described the scene:

"Gehrig evoked tears and laughter with words which made the previous speeches sound rather hollow. He was wonderful. Somehow he managed to control his voice. And when he was through, Ruth put his arm around him... People were crying in the stands when Gehrig finished. And they were ready to laugh again when Ruth put his arms around Gehrig and advised him to try out the fishing rod that had been given him and catch all the fish in the sea."

The provided image is one of our very favorites ever shot on a baseball diamond, the smile on each legend's face as multi-faceted as the Mona Lisa's. A few editorial markings adorn the borders of the photo, while the reverse holds the original "July 4, 1939" caption and a clipping from the newspaper in which it was published. A couple light rust stains appear on the image area, and light edge and corner wear, but none of these are any true distraction. Dimensions 8x10". LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
