A huge and flawless Ruth signature in ultra-rare format!

1938 Charles "Red" Ruffing All America Team Certificate Signed by Babe Ruth. Quite a few parallels between the man to whom this impressive relic was issued and its most famous signer, beginning, of course, with five seasons of shared tenure in the Yankee dugout between Ruffing's 1930 arrival and Ruth's 1934 departure. Each likewise made his Major League debut in the uniform of the Boston Red Sox, and proved himself to be both one of the game's elite pitchers and unusually handy with the lumber as well. While Ruffing's batting skill certainly couldn't compare to that of Ruth, the red-headed righty was such a solid slugger that he was often called into duty as a pinch hitter on his off days, posting a stellar .364 average during his first season in pinstripes with 110 at bats.

The presented document pays tribute to his successes of 1938, however, recognizing an American League-leading twenty-one victory season against just seven defeats, a performance that earned Ruffing a fourth-place finish in MVP voting. The Yankee ace would surrender just three runs in two complete game World Series victories to three-peat as Champion.

The certificate's design should be familiar to most of our Heritage clientele, as we have been fortunate to handle examples from Lou Gehrig, Pie Traynor and Carl Hubbell in the past. A selection of top sportwriters from the Major League cities underscore that of the association's chairman, who signs in 9+/10 black fountain pen ink, "George Herman Ruth." Signing at bottom in 8/10 ink is Ruth's famous agent Christy Walsh.

A small degree of dampstaining appears at lower edge but causes little visual distraction, and the piece otherwise remains free of any negatives. It measures approximately 12x16" in size and is professionally double-matted and framed to 18x22". Also included is a Type 1 news photograph (7x9") picturing Ruth presenting similar All America certificates to Joe Cronin, Jimmy Foxx and Earl Whitehill at the 1933 World Series. VG-EX.
