1936 Hank Greenberg Vintage Photograph Lot of 2.
Fresh of a World Series victory in 1935 the Detroit Tigers featured a powerhouse lineup and rotation with four future Hall of Famers, so optimism in the Motor City was high at the beginning of the '36 season. At the center of the Tigers' lineup was big Hank Greenberg, who was off to a roaring start - that all came to a crashing halt on April 29th.

Washington Senators' centerfielder Jake Powell bounced a grounder to the right side of the infield, hustling down the basepath he collided with Greenberg, spiking him and sending the pair tumbling to the ground. The play resulted in a broken wrist for Greenberg, and a completely lost season. While Powell claimed the collision to be an accident, later comments that he was suspended for have lead many to believe this spiking was intentional due to Greenberg's Jewish heritage.

Offered are a pair of vintage photographs that show some of the aftermath of the incident. An 8x10" image dated May 19 shows Greenberg attempting to catch a fly ball with his off hand, while his left wrist remains in a cast. Moderate wear exhibited throughout, various stampings on the reverse. The other image, measuring 6x8", shows the slugger in dress clothes at a doctor's office after learning that he would be out for the remainder of the season. Photo is dated June 26th, has original caption attached, and shows moderate wear throughout with Acme stampings on the reverse.
