1931 Tour of Japan Photographic Promotional Broadside, PSA/DNA Type 3 from The Lou Gehrig Collection.

UPDATE: This lot includes a letter of provenance from the consignor.

Extraordinary (and almost certainly sole surviving) piece heralds the forthcoming 1931 Tour of Japan with [translated] text reading, "Gehrig, Home Run Leader and Cochrane, world's number one catcher--Players of Major League Baseball All-Star Game this Autumn, Sponsor Yomiuri Shiumbun sha." Cochrane did not participate in the 1934 Tour, so this can only be from 1931.

Simply as an oversized (11x14") photograph, this is a genuine treasure of baseball memorabilia, but as a promotional broadside for the 1931 Tour of Japan retained as a souvenir by Lou Gehrig himself, this is one of the most important display pieces offered in recent years. We must acknowledge the condition issues of chipping and creasing, but we must also instantly excuse them in light of the enormous significance of the piece. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 3. Letter of provenance from consignor.
