1931 Baseball Tour of Japan Team Signed Photograph--The Only Example Known! Certainly it was the addition of Babe Ruth to the 1934 edition that made that Tour so dramatically overshadow this earlier voyage in baseball history, but the cast of characters here is nearly as impressive as its younger brother's, and relics from the 1931 expedition are considerably more rare. The image was snapped on the deck of the Tatsuta Maru ocean liner as it steamed across the Pacific, and was later autographed by seventeen of the gentlemen pictured.

The roster of signers, clockwise from top left: Rabbit Maranville, umpire J.E. Reardon, Ralph Shinners, George Kelly, Al Simmons, tour orgaziner Herb Hunter, Willie Kamm, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Cochrane, Frank Frisch, Bruce Cunningham, Lefty O'Doul, the Japanese ship's captain, sportswriter Fred Lieb, Muddy Ruel, Lefty Grove and an unknown signature in Japanese characters. Some of the upper row of signatures compete for contrast against the dark background, but otherwise all are quite readily legible, averaging 8/10 with none below 6/10. Photo measures 4.5x6.5" and exhibits minor creasing and a small lower border tear upon close inspection, to no real distraction. Professionally framed to final dimensions of 12x13.5".
