1931 Baseball Tour of Japan Team Signed Photograph, PSA/DNA NM 7.
Certainly it was the addition of Babe Ruth to the 1934 edition that made that Tour so dramatically overshadow this earlier voyage in baseball history, but the cast of characters here is nearly as impressive as its younger brother's, and relics from the 1931 expedition are considerably more rare. In fact, this is just the third team signed photograph to surface in the collecting hobby, and the only known example of this particular image.

It finds the intrepid cast of superstars wearing gorgeous patriotic warm-up jackets at the center of a massive, deserted Japanese arena. Each of the seventeen men pictured has signed his image, with only Rabbit Maranville (3/10) departing measurably from the common theme of bold fountain pen ink assessed at a NM 7 level by the experts at PSA/DNA.

Notable signers include Gehrig, Cochrane, Kelly, Maranville, Frisch and Ruel. The photo measures approximately 5.5x7.5" in size and presents beautifully, with evidence of scrapbook removal on verso the only material condition issue to report. A truly glorious, one-of-a-kind relic consigned along with several other Tour relics by a Japanese national, making its American debut nearly nine decades after its birth. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, NM 7. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1. Full LOA from SGC Authentic.
