    The murderers of Murderers' Row...

1929 Philadelphia Athletics Team Signed Panoramic Photograph from The Al Simmons Collection. Following back-to-back World Series sweeps in 1927 and 1928, there was every reason to believe that the Yankee juggernaut would continue to roll for years to come, leaving only devastation in its wake. But, fifteen years after the dissolution of his first great World Championship dynasty, Connie Mack brought forth another in the City of Brotherly Love in 1929, giving the Bronx Bombers their Octobers off for three consecutive seasons.

This is the first, and arguably the finest, of those elite Athletic editions, presented in our most favored format. We've always loved the vintage weirdness of team panoramics, the way that the background falls away at the edges like an M.C. Escher creation because of the distortion of perspective that results from the manner in which panoramics were created.

While it would appear the team is standing in a straight line, they were actually arranged in a semicircle equidistant from a camera that slowly rotated to take in the full scene. So while the figures at the center of the image might be standing in front of home plate, those at the edges could have their backs to the foul poles, making the grandstands behind them appear to bend away from the viewer.

But, of course, the primary appeal here is the extraordinary cast of immortals that made this team World Champions, notably Connie Mack, Jimmie Foxx, Eddie Collins, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, 1919 Black Sox manager Kid Gleason, and Hall of Fame outfielder Al Simmons, the team's leading run producer from whose personal collection this photo derives. The black fountain pen signatures average an impressive and quite consistent 8/10, and condition caveats are required only to report minor staining at far right, and a single hole, smaller than a dime, that affects only Mack's son Earle, a coach. Dimensions are 30x8". Letter of provenance from Simmons family. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC Authentic.
