1929 New York Yankees Watch Ceremony with Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Original News Photograph. After the Yankees defeated the Cardinals in the 1928 World Series to claim their second consecutive title and Fall Classic sweep, Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis presented all the members of Murderer's Row with diamond studded watches, to commemorate their monumental achievement, during the April 18, 1929 Opening Day ceremonies at Yankee Stadium.

In original news photograph presented here the shutterbug captured the exact moment Landis handed the Babe his watch. Close by Landis are Yankees owner Colonel Jacob Ruppert and American League president Earnest Barnard. Gehrig appears to Ruth's right, looking down at the watch he has already received.

The verso of the image includes 4/19/29 date stamp, "Landis handing out watches" in vintage pencil, and the newspaper photo caption tear sheet with "Here's Judge K.M. Landis giving members of the Yank team wrist watches before the yesterday's game."

This day was also significant for the fact it was the first time the Yankees ever wore uniform numbers. wore numbers for first time. Ruth, ever blessed with a timely flair for dramatic, launched a solo home run in first inning to christen the new jerseys. The 7.25x10" image is splendidly matted in open glass-backed frame to the dimensions of 13.5x16.5". Four of the corners are chipped but the central image and stars are untouched and beautiful.
