    Description

1927 Lou Gehrig "Eyes" Original News Photograph by Charles Conlon, PSA/DNA Type 1. Compelling photographic portrait of the Iron Horse is unmistakably the work of Charles Conlon, the foremost visual documentarian of the Golden Age game. Regular Heritage bidders will recall our offering of "The Charles Conlon Photographic Archive" last August, a comprehensive collection of the artist's original negatives that commanded a massive $1.8M winning bid. That figure only begins to place the importance of Conlon's work in its proper context.

This image is considered one of the highlights of Conlon's oeuvre, and unquestionably one of the most famous and desirable photographic portraits of the tragic Hall of Famer. Conlon rather daringly departs from the industry standard with a super-close-up of the American League MVP, and this artistic choice is apparent in his most celebrated and coveted images.

Original "Underwood & Underwood" caption on verso dates the print to "10/4/27," the eve of a four-game World Series sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates that definitively stamped this most celebrated Bronx vintage with the nickname "Murderer's Row." The print measures 7x5" and presents marvelously, with a light corner bend at lower left border the only fault to report. Full LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
