Printed on the eve of World Series opener!

1927 Lou Gehrig "Eyes" News Photograph by Charles Conlon, PSA/DNA Type 1. Baseball memorabilia or fine art? Masterful photographic image departs from the standard journalist chore of simple documentation and ventures into something far more interesting, a perspective on the noble Iron Horse that no other image could provide. The master behind the camera? None other than Charles Conlon, one of the most accomplished and collectible photographers in the sporting realm and leading member of the "Underwood & Underwood" syndicate during the 1920's. The intact paper caption on reverse provides all the other relevant details, and they're thrilling:

Can you recognize your favorite? Eyes of Yankee Slugger who will face Pirates twirlers.

New York.-- Lou Gehrig, who had 216 hits this season--46 home-runs, 17 three-baggers, 53 two base hits. His general average is .374."

As noted in the lot title, the image was released just one day before Game One of the 1927 World Series, a five-to-four victory over the hosts at Forbes Field. Four days later, Yankees second baseman Tony Lazzeri would sprint home on a Johnny Miljus wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk off as World Champions in a sweep. Gehrig would soon after be named MVP of the American League, the final jewel in the crown for the greatest team ever to wear a Major League uniform.

With artful execution and ideal vintage, this is far from your average Gehrig photo, a fact that the bidding process will surely validate. Condition is the final jewel in the crown, with a small tear at left edge that barely clears the white border the only issue of any note beyond typical corner wear. Dimensions 5x7". LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
