1927 Babe Ruth, Miller Huggins & Lou Gehrig Large Photograph by Louis Van Oeyen, PSA/DNA Type 1. Perhaps the finest Van Oeyen photo we've had the good fortune to offer, this spectacular shot is huge in every regard but the stature of the Hall of Fame skipper at center. Flanking the diminutive Miller Huggins, who would perish suddenly and tragically just two years after this glorious 1927 campaign, are the men who would break the single season home run record and win the American League MVP in 1927 respectively. The reason for the creation of this unusually large period print (11x14") has been lost to history, but the great expense in doing so at this point in photographic history suggests the original owner was a man of some distinction. Handwritten text on verso identifies the subjects and dates the shot to "July 12th, 1927," the day of a seven to nothing pummeling of the Cleveland Indians at Dunn Field. Stamping just above reads, "Photo by L. Van Oeyen, Cleveland, O." A degree of handling wear consistent with vintage photography of these dimensions is to be found, but the aesthetics remain quite strong. Oversized Van Oeyen photos are rarely seen, and none we've encountered feature such a Mount Rushmore of Yankee greats. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
