Signed just four days after the World Series sweep!

1927 Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Dual-Signed Barnstorming Photograph. It's one of the most common Ruth/Gehrig images in reproduction format, but one of the scarcest and most desirable in its original incarnation as presented here, a thrilling relic from the American barnstorming tour that paired the greatest home run sluggers the sport had ever seen. Hardly a week goes by that we are not contacted by an excited potential consignor fooled by the ubiquitous copies, but this is just the third authentic example to reach the Heritage auction block.

The thrilling relic finds the author of the first sixty home run season and the American League MVP just four days removed from their World Series sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to the latter's handwritten date. He inscribes the image, "To Joseph James Bihler, Souvenir of our visit to your house, Best Wishes, Lou Gehrig, Oct. 12, 1927." The recipient was a reporter for The New York Herald and close friend of the Hall of Fame first baseman. Ruth simply signs his name in the desirable quotation-marked format he'd abandon not long after this season. Their ink ranges from 6/10 to 7/10 in strength. The bolder text below the sluggers' waists is part of the print, not applied by hand.

An inch-long tear appears in the upper left quadrant of the image, but it remains well clear of all text and thus causes only minor distraction. Verso bears printed text reading, "Official Souvenir Photo, Home Run Tour, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Christy Walsh Management." This text appears in a window cut in a card stock backing to which the rest of the 10x8" photo is affixed. A highly desirable hobby standard deriving from the absolute pinnacle of the Bronx' glory days. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
