Description

1923 Casey Stengel World Series Home Run Large Wire Photograph from the Casey Stengel Collection. Voted number sixty-six on ESPN's list of the one hundred greatest home runs is Casey Stengel's ninth inning inside-the-park game-winner in the first game of the '23 Series. With a full count and two outs, Casey blasted a shot deep into the outfield grass of Yankee Stadium and took off in an odd and awkward sprint around the bases. Fans and teammates watched with excitement and confusion, wondering both if Casey would make it all the way home, and why the heck he was running in a manner not unlike a duck. Most assumed it was Stengel's recent broken leg that caused this comical stride, but in fact it was symptomatic of his shoe disintegrating on his foot as he ran. Regardless of the reason, this bizarre and brilliant event became the stuff of legend. In this huge (11x14") and remarkable image, we see the sliding end of his historic circumnavigation of the diamond, the ball bounding away from Yankee catcher Wally Schang as the entire tribe of New York Giants surges forward from the visitor's dugout to watch the play at the plate. Identified in vintage pencil at far left is Hall of Fame teammate "Geo Kelly." A single 3" tear rises from the bottom of the photo but encounters nothing but empty ground. A few minor edge wrinkles and some border chipping account for the balance of the wear, and none of this does anything significant to detract. "International Newsreel" stamping on verso, along with vintage tape and a pencil notation that reads, "Stengel's 1st Home Run Series 1923."
