"I'd give a year of my life if I can hit a home run in the first game in this new park."

1923 Babe Ruth Hits First Home Run at Yankee Stadium Original News Photograph, PSA/DNA Type 1. He smashed 729 home runs in Major League competition, inclusive of the fifteen recorded in World Series play, but the Babe always contended that his favorite had been the third-inning blast he launched on April 18, 1923 to christen the brand-new Yankee Stadium with its very first circuit clout. Facing the former teammates he had doomed with an eight-six-year "Curse," the svelte Bambino's three-run shot would prove to be the game-winner in a four-to-one result, the first of ninety-eight regular season wins en route to the team's third straight American League pennant and, ultimately, its first taste of World Championship glory.

The New York Times called the Babe's scorching liner into the right field stands, "a savage home run that was the real baptism of Yankee Stadium," while Heywood Broun of the New York World wrote of the prodigious blast, "It would have been a home run in the Sahara Desert."

We find Ruth completing his home run trot in this spectacular image shot down the third base line of those hallowed baseball grounds. Ruth's good luck charm, hunchbacked bat boy Eddie Bennett, holds the scorched lumber as he welcomes the 1923 American League MVP at the plate. Teammate Joe Dugan, plated by Ruth's long ball, heads toward the Yankee dugout as Hall of Fame umpire Tommy Connolly and Red Sox catcher Al DeVormer watch.

The 6.5x8.5" photo bears stamping and a typed paper caption on verso from "Keystone View Co.," best known as a distributor of stereographic images but present here for the making of baseball history. Light handling/storage wear is evident, but there are no condition issues of distraction. The photo is professionally matted and framed to a museum-quality 14x17". LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
