1922 New York Yankees Large Team Photograph from Yankee Stadium. Enormous (22x38") team shot finds the American League Champions casually posed in their pinstripes during the club's final season in the Polo Grounds before their move across the Harlem River to the greatest baseball palace the world had ever known. That new ballpark in the Bronx is where this magnificent artifact spent the first decades of its life, on display to inspire the next few dozen pennant-winners to follow before its removal during the mid-1970's renovations. The great Babe Ruth, looking young and trim, stands at far right, not far from fellow Hall of Famer Waite Hoyt and Carl Mays, who had killed Ray Chapman with a fastball to the skull two seasons earlier. The hunchbacked bat boy Eddie Bennett, Babe Ruth's personal good luck charm, sits cross-legged in the front row. Condition is remarkably strong, with four holes drilled in the cardboard stock where the image was affixed to a Yankee Stadium wall the only issues of note. Framing job dates to not long after the photo's removal from the Stadium and has likewise survived admirably. Certainly one of the most appealing early Yankee Stadium artifacts to reach the auction block in some time. Third party shipping is required.
