1921 Babe Ruth Original News Photograph by George Grantham Bain, PSA/DNA Type 1. This magnificent portrait photograph finds a battered but unbowed Babe snapped within days of claiming the Yankees' first American League pennant and his record 59th home run. Beyond the typed text on reverse dating the image to "Sept. 27, 1921," we can be sure of the season by the rare cap format the superstar slugger sports--the only time Ruth ever wore this style was in 1921 home games--and the tape wrapped around his wrist.

Remarkably (when considering his 1921 stat line), that nagging injury to Ruth's wrist can find documentation as far back as a May of that year, and he'd aggravate the problem in the Cleveland series that ended the day before this image was snapped. Many historians believe that the injury documented here was the difference in the Yankees' Fall Classic meeting with their Polo Grounds landlords, as Ruth missed two of the eight games and less than his best when he did play.

The man on the other side of the camera never disappoints, of course, the great George Grantham Bain, renowned photojournalist known to history as "the father of foreign photographic news" and founder of the eponymous "Bain News Service." That organization would be acquired by "Culver Pictures" upon Bain's passing in 1944, and their stamping appears on verso, as does their 1992 deaccession stamp.

The photo measures 6.75x5" in size and presents marvelously, a small chip and bend at upper left corner, well contained within the wide border area, the only issues to report. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Type 1.
