    Description

1921 Babe Ruth First World Series Home Run Original News Photograph, PSA/DNA Type 1. He was the man whose Louisville Slugger shoveled dirt onto the coffin of the Dead Ball Era, trading the old guard's slap-and-sprint ways for a new slug-and-jog format that captivated America and the world. Under Ruth, the home run became the most fashionable event in all of sports, and this remarkable image finds him stepping on home plate to register his superhuman sixtieth as a member of the 1921 New York Yankees.

The first fifty-nine homers, of course, came during the Bambino's dazzling 152 regular season appearances in 1921, that elevation of his own record becoming the prey he'd stalk a half-dozen years before success as lead assassin of Murderer's Row. Exactly a week after hitting his record 59th home run of the 1921 season--again in the shadow of Coogan's Bluff--Babe Ruth launched this first of fifteen in World Series competition.

Though another larger-than-life Yankee would ultimately surpass the longstanding World Series home run record that the Babe began to construct in this image, there's no denying the baseball continents are shifting here. The Yankees would fall this year and the next before slaying the Giants both physically and architecturally in 1923, and effectively ruling Big Apple baseball for the next thirty-five years to come.

In that profound context, a nod to fashion seems silly, but we've always coveted that white pinstriped cap, a long-extinct style last worn by the Yanks for 1921 home games before unbroken fidelity to the enduring standard. This World Series Game Four considered the Yankees the hosts of their Polo Grounds landlords.

The image measures 8x10" with a fold line about two inches from the right border and corner bends. Original paper caption on verso makes note of the historic occasion. Various stamps and editorial markings. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Type 1.
