1918 Ty Cobb Military Portrait In Presentational Folder - From The Ty Cobb Collection. In 1918, after hitting .382 and winning his eleventh A.L. batting title, Ty Cobb enlisted in the Chemical Corps branch of the U.S. Army where he was assigned to the Gas and Flame Division. Given the rank of captain, he served under Branch Rickey, along with Christy Matthewson and George Sisler. The then-lifetime .370 hitter was stationed in Chaumont, France where he spent a little over two months before receiving his honorable discharge.

Cobb looks like a movie star in this spectacular studio portrait, taken shorty before his overseas deployment. The oversized image (6.5x10.5" ) depicts Cobb in full dress uniform, has "C.V. Buck, Wash D.C." embossed at the lower right, and is neatly housed in its original presentational folder (9.5x15.25"). Exhibits some minor surface discoloration toning, and wear but the overall condition is otherwise spectacular when you consider it's over a century old.
