1917 Cincinnati Reds Panoramic Photograph with Christy Mathewson. Just thirteen days after the United States declared war on Germany and entered World War I, this wondrous panoramic image was taken. Depicts twenty-two members of the 1917 Cincinnati Reds, including Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson (manager), Bill McKechnie and Ed Roush. Others include Hal Chase, Tommy Griffith, Ivy Wingo, Greasy Neale, Fred Toney, Larry Kopf, Heine Groh, Dave Sheen, Manuel Cueto, and Hod Eller. Many of these players would still be on the team two years later when they defeated the Chicago Black Sox in the 1919 World Series.

Standing and seated behind the team is a sea of Royal Red Rooters, dressed to the nines, many of whom are waving American flags and wearing Reds ribbons, in support of the war effort and their team, respectively. Just one year later, Mathewson would enlist in the U.S. Army where he served overseas as a captain in the Chemical Service. In that capacity, he was accidentally gassed which led to him contracting tuberculosis and passing away in 1925 at the age of forty-five.

Cartouche at bottom reads: "Royal Red Rooters of Cincinnati at the Opening Game between St. Louis and Cincinnati at St. Louis, April 19, '17" at left and "Photo by La Mertha, 1108 Times Bl'dg', St. Louis" at right. Triple-matted and framed 37.25x13.25" (30x6" visible in frame) with no distractions observed. This rare issue is the first exemplar we have ever offered.
