1915 Mordecai Brown Federal League Lantern Slide. From the same source that brought us the outstanding slide picturing Babe Ruth with the 1916 Red Sox pitching staff comes another simply remarkable artifact from the projector room of a silent movie cinema. This one pictures the great "Three Finger" Brown (called by his other nickname, "Miner," here) delivering a pitch directly toward the camera, his missing fingers clearly visible. Adding to the tremendous appeal is the fact that the image dates to his service to the rogue Federal League, which lured many of baseball's greatest players with the promise of higher wages before folding after its second season of operation. Any vintage photograph from this brief episode in the history of our National Pastime is considered highly collectible, but to find one with this tough Hall of Famer in the uniform of the Chicago Whales should send the jaws of serious Federal League collectors dropping to the floor. The "American Press Association" caption below the image reads, "'Miner' Brown, erstwhile star of the old Cub machine and now member of Chifeds, is confined in Chicago hospital with an acute attack of nephritis. It is believed he will recover." As with the Ruth slide, condition is beyond reproach, and the 3.25x4" glass transparency could certainly be used to create prints of almost unlimited size.
