1915 Boston Red Sox Pitching Staff with Rookie Babe Ruth Original News Photograph by George Grantham Bain, PSA/DNA Type 1. "Ruth made a grave mistake when he gave up pitching," Tris Speaker told reporters in 1921 during a discussion about his former Red Sox teammate. "Working once a week, he might have lasted a long time and become a great star." The pair would reunite in 1939 on the dais in Cooperstown as members of the inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The offered photo (4.5x6.5") dates to the first World Championship season that Ruth and Speaker would share, a marvelous image of the pitching rotation that posted the third-highest winning percentage in BoSox franchise history. From left to right, we find Rube Foster, Carl Mays, Ernie Shore, Babe Ruth and Dutch Leonard. Heritage sold a different image from this same shoot a couple years ago that identified the date as October 7, 1915, the final game of the regular season that saw the BoSox drop a meaningless contest to the Yankees at the Polo Grounds the day before the start of the World Series.

The image is produced with crystal clarity, hardly a surprise after spotting the "Bain News Service" stamp on verso that identifies the photographer as the legendary George Grantham Bain, the most esteemed photojournalist in New York City in the first quarter of the twentieth century. We also find faint text identifying the subjects of the photo on verso, and a ring of adhesive that suggests the photo was once affixed to some form of backing. However, beyond minor rounding of the photo's corners, the obverse presents flawlessly, making this one of the finest Red Sox-era Ruth images available in the hobby. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Type 1.
