1914-16 Babe Ruth in Boston Red Sox Uniform News Photograph. Extraordinary Type 1 photographic portrait may be the finest early image of baseball's greatest figure ever offered, a captivating study of a man on the precipice of sports immortality. While period photography of the Golden Age slugger has long been highly prized within the collecting community, those images dating to Ruth's early years at Fenway carry greatly heightened appeal for their enormous rarity relative to those images dating to the Yankee years when the Babe was the most photographed athlete in America. Only a very small handful of Red Sox photos surface within a typical hobby year, and none that we've seen could compete with this soulful representation.

The photo measures 6x7.5", trimmed by editorial staffers from a larger size, this alteration very typical of pre-war sports news photography. Various stamping and writing resultant of the photo's use in period newspapers appears on verso, as does the original "Underwood & Underwood" paper caption stating "BOSTON AMERICAN LAYER (sic), Pitcher Ruth."

A vertical crease runs a half inch from the left edge, but the effect is minimally distracting and could easily be matted out when framed, though this would certainly not be necessary for optimal display. The central focus of the image is unaffected by any notable condition concerns. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
