1913 New York Giants vs. Chicago White Sox Double Panoramic Photograph Display. Those collectors fascinated by the tragically defunct tradition of Major League barnstorming tours are sure to fall hopelessly in love with the presented artifact, a pair of panoramic photos capturing the scene at Oxnard, California's City Athletic Park Grounds on November 11, 1913 when the National League Champion New York Giants and the Chicago White Sox brought their show on the road. As Europe teetered on the brink of World War, the tour visited twenty-seven American cities and thirteen nations from England to Japan, giving countless thousands their first taste of this thoroughly American pastime. This is arguably the finest photographic record of that historic odyssey.

First we encounter an image of all tour participants standing in a row before a packed grandstand of excited onlookers. Captured with razor-sharp clarity are such unforgettable figures as Christy Mathewson, John McGraw, Rube Marquard, Sam Crawford, Bill Klem, Tris Speaker, Chief Meyers, Fred Merkle, Edd Roush and future Black Sox conspirator Buck Weaver. Just below a spectator's eye view is provided from just behind home plate, with Mathewson ducking below a throw from his third baseman attempting to retire a White Sox baserunner at first.

While each 6x43" image exhibits some vertical creasing from having been rolled and then flattened, these cracks in the emulsion do not considerably distract from the impressive aesthetics, leaving the photos to present far better than their technical grades. The simple framing and matting job results in final dimensions of 19x50". Included with the lot are two reference books: James Elfers' The Tour to End All Tours, and Jeffrey Maulhardt's The Day The New York Giants Came to Oxnard. Third party shipping is required.
