1911 New York Giants Mounted Panoramic Photograph. Remarkable panoramic image of the National League Champions is consigned to this auction by the Devore family, descendants of outfielder Josh Devore whose sixty-one base thefts in 1911 was second best in the Senior Circuit. Though any baseball historian would attribute the success of this team to a playing roster all but unparalleled in the Dead Ball Game, Hall of Fame manager John McGraw was convinced that his team's fortunes rest in the lucky charm of Charles "Victory" Faust, a bush league pitcher at best whose delusions of greatness proved contagious. Though McGraw only pitched Faust once the pennant was in hand, he kept the talentless hurler on the roster out of pure superstition. After his dimissal from the team following the World Series loss to the Athletics, Faust was institutionalized and passed away in June 1915, buried on the grounds of the Western Washington State Hospital for the Insane. That's Faust, standing second from right. Other notables pictured include McGraw, coach Wilbert Robinson, Christy Mathewson, Rube Marquard, Fred Merkle, Fred Snodgrass and Josh Devore. The 9x23.5" image is mounted to a cardboard backing and housed in its original frame, which concludes the dimensions at 14.5x28.5". "The Pictorial News Co., N.Y." is printed at lower right, with "New York Giants 1911" at center. Condition is superb, with no distractions meriting a mention. Letter of provenance from the Devore family.
