1910 Philadelphia Athletics Team Cabinet Photograph in Cuba. Previously unknown image was removed from the personal scrapbook of Frederick "Topsy" Hartsel, whose jersey, 1910 Championship trophy and several other artifacts are featured within this auction. We must thank the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society for their generous assistance in shedding some light upon the history of this photograph, which had initially confused us due to the Spanish language studio stamping that appears on the reverse. The society informed us that in December 1910, just several weeks after their World Series victory, most of the Athletics travelled to Cuba where Cincinnati business manager Frank Bancroft had lined up exhibition games against the Detroit Tigers and the top Cuban professional teams. Certainly this is the photograph's derivation. A listing of players in uniform was also generously provided. Standing: Derrick, Bender, Lap. Seated: Plank, McInnis, Hartsel, Davis, unidentified (probably Morgan), Thomas, Barry, Murphy. The fine sepia image measures 5x7" and presents razor-sharp contrast with not a single flaw of note. Hartsel is identified in an unknown hand as "Topsy" in blue ink. The cardboard mount shows typical edge and corner wear with some paper loss at lower right corner and scrapbook remnants on verso, 7x9". A unique view into one of baseball's great dynasties, as well as one of its earliest foreign excursions.
