    Description

1910-38 Chicago Cubs Team Photograph Negatives Lot of 14. Born under any other name, legendary baseball photographer George Burke would almost certainly have failed to achieve any substantial degree of notoriety. But when 1929 Chicago Cubs manager Joe McCarthy and catcher Gabby Hartnett wanted photographs of the players in street clothes, and placed a call to the old Cubs' team photographer, they made a fortuitous mistake. Meaning to contact Francis Burke, the Cubs called George instead, and the new Burke jumped at the chance to shoot at Wrigley. Soon he supplanted Francis as the official lensman for the Cubs and White Sox, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Offered here is a thrilling assortment of original negatives from Burke's famed Chicago studio. Those familiar with Burke's oeuvre will certainly understand what a great and rare opportunity it is to acquire what amounts to original artwork from this most famous of baseball photographers. Burke's portraits of the great pre-war Hall of Famers stand forever as some of the definitive photographic documentation of our National pastime. What Matthew Brady was to Civil War photography, George Burke was to 1930's baseball. All negatives remain in surprisingly excellent condition, and could still be used to create high-quality prints of almost unlimited dimensions.

Featuring five glass plate negatives, with the remainder the more common film stock, this intriguing collection documents close to three decades of Wrigley inhabitants. Present are the Cubs teams of 1910, 1915, 1918 and two identical images of the 1929 club. The standard (non-glass) negatives feature 1907 (two identical), 1908, 1907-08, 1930, 1932 (two different images), 1935 and 1938. All negatives measure approximately 8x10" in size, and are free of any noteworthy condition issues with the single exception of the 1907-08 negative, which shows a fair degree of heat warping.
