Description1910-30 Ty Cobb Personal Photographic Scrapbook One very lucky winning bidder will gain insight into the life of the iconic Cobb in a way few others have been able as he delves into over 140 photographs carefully pasted into the pages of a scrapbook by the man himself over the course of his professional career. Descriptive copy couldn't possibly convey the breadth and brilliance of the photos, and while our catalog imagery and online listing (which will offer more images than the printed catalog) presents highlights, there are far too many great shots to picture them all.
Approximately sixty images find Cobb in uniform, and include unbelievable action shots of sliding, batting, catching, throwing and stunning portraits. Some are personal snapshots, others larger images with dimensions of seven through ten inches per side. Some picture Cobb with teammates, others solo. Many appear to be news photos, sometimes complete with editing marks, many trimmed somewhat to fit the dimensions of the scrapbook pages.
There is a remarkable Tigers team photo, and a scalpel-sharp image of a young Cobb sitting in the new Chalmers automobile earned for winning the 1911 batting title. There is a photo of him with entertainer Joe Brown, autographed (10/10) by the latter. His second great love, hunting, is well represented as well, with rifle-toting shots of the Hall of Famer and others that show skies and lakes full of his quarry. He rides burros and catches fish.
Condition varies quite a bit, with many photos simply flawless, and others showing significant edge wear and crinkling. Occasionally a torn photo is repaired by tape. Some are missing chips from the corners, but all maintain their basic integrity and never fail to excite. Certainly it is the most important photographic archive documenting the professional and personal life of a single baseball star ever to reach the public auction block.
We strenuously encourage serious bidders to make any possible effort to view this lot at our Dallas offices, and dare any of them not to fall head over heels for this voluminous archive of images. It would be an exercise in futility. Note that each photo in the album will be accompanied by its own letter of provenance from Cobb's young friend Rex Teeslink.
The Rex Teeslink Archive of Ty Cobb Memorabilia
When the great Tyrus R. Cobb passed away at Emory University Hospital after a long cancer battle at the age of seventy-four, Rex Teeslink and Cobb's nurse were the only two people at Cobb's bedside. Teeslink had developed a close friendship with the dying legend over the course of approximately two years that he served as Cobb's caretaker while attending medical school, and the Hall of Famer's affection for the young man is clear in the letters he sent and the artifacts he willed to him. Now approximately the same age that Cobb had been during their time together, Teeslink has released the following artifacts to the collecting public, some of the most unique and intriguing material from the legendary Georgia Peach ever to make their debut at public auction. Each lot will be accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Teeslink.
