1909 Pittsburgh Pirates Team Panoramic Photograph. History was made in our August 2011 Platinum Night auction when a high-grade example of this photograph from the personal collection of back-up catcher Paddy O'Connor realized $26,290. While the hobby had seen the image in various paper supplements from periodicals of the day, that O'Connor photographic original was the first of its type to surface. Here we encounter just the second.

Though lacking the pristine condition of that first example, the presented image of Honus Wagner, Vic Willis, Fred Clarke and the gang is not too far behind. The 9x31" photo is affixed to a cardboard mount which extends the final dimensions to approximately 12x33". The mount is chipped at far right and the upper left corner, but only in the latter instance is the image itself affected, losing a small portion of the print well clear of the central focus. The mount has otherwise served its passenger well, saving the panorama from the tearing and creasing so common in similar representations. In terms of surface area, we can honestly report that 98% of the image enjoys a NRMT-MT status. A thoroughly appealing and impressive visual documentation of the first Pittsburgh Pirates World Championship team.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
