1909 Forbes Field (Pittsburgh Pirates) Panoramic Photograph. "Pittsburg can now boast of the world's finest baseball park," manager Fred Clarke told reporters in 1909. "It is a marvel of which people in other cities can have no adequate conception until they come here and see it." An engineering tour de force at the time of its construction, the new home of the Pittsburgh Pirates boasted concrete and steel construction rather than the standard wood design of contemporary stadia, and it featured the first three-tier seating architecture in ballpark history. Surely this image was commissioned by Dreyfuss to capture the brilliance of the newborn edifice, affording the viewer the next best thing to a center field seat during that first Pirates World Championship season. The image captures game action--note the blur of a runner between first and second--and measures 5.5x19" in size. The image is dated and attributed at lower right: "Photo & Copyright 1909 by Chautauqua Photographic, Co. Pittsburg Pa." The cardboard mount expands final dimensions to 9.75x24". A corner chip at bottom right has been repaired with tape, and represents the bulk of condition concerns. The image itself is free of any notable flaws.

    The Paddy O'Connor Collection.

This is one of sixteen lots deriving from the personal collection of Paddy O'Connor, a native of County Kerry, Ireland who quickly discovered an aptitude for our National Pastime upon his immigration to the States. O'Connor's baseball career included brief terms in the American, National and Federal Leagues, and most notably membership with the World Championship 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates. The material offered here is consigned directly by the O'Connor family.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
