1909 Christy Mathewson Wire Photograph by Thompson, Type 1. Though small in stature (photo measures 2.75x4"), this fine sepia image of Mathewson during pre-game warm-ups dates from a season that saw him go twenty-five and six while leading a pitching rotation featuring Rube Marquard and Hooks Wiltse. Note the black memorial band on his left sleeve--that dates the image to the latter half of the 1909 season, when the National League was mourning the suicide of their president Harry Pulliam. Photo has been trimmed from a larger size, sacrificing some of the typed paper caption on verso, though the important "Paul Thompson" stamping is unaffected. Image shows no noteworthy condition flaws, presenting as NRMT. Confirmed as "Type 1" by PSA/DNA.
