The Dead Ball Era comes to life!

1907 Chicago Cubs vs. Detroit Tigers World Series Panoramic Photograph, PSA/DNA Type 1. Massive in both dimension and collecting appeal, this extraordinary image places the viewer into the infield stands of the fourth World Series ever waged, a summit of Dead Ball Era titans contested at Chicago's West Side Grounds. Bold white text at center of the bottom edge sets the scene as "World's Championship Series, Detroit vs. Chicago, Oct. 9, '07," the early Fall Classic's second contest, but the first in which a victor was declared, as the previous day's result was declared a draw when darkness drew the curtain after a scoreless twelfth inning.

The mighty Cubs would take the victory in a three-to-one final this date, and continue on to complete the sweep three days later, the first of three consecutive October disappointments for a young Ty Cobb and his Detroit felines. That's the Georgia Peach at the plate, facing down Chicago's ace southpaw Jack Pfiester, whose absurd 1.15 ERA for the regular season lead all National Leaguers in 1907. Behind Pfiester stands the storied double-play triumvirate of Tinkers, Evers and Chance.

The image is positively bursting with delectable period detail. Note the population of white-bandana-ed fans that rings the lower level of the field all the way to the foul poles, apparently a show of solidarity with the white-capped home team, whose open-air bench appears at the field edge closest to the viewer. Silhouetted figures stand atop the grandstands, and on the tops of buildings beyond the outfield stands. In the foreground, a few bemused fans turn to watch the photographer at his craft.

The mastery of the image is no surprise, as it derives from the studios of the George Lawrence company, whose wide Dead Ball and Golden Age vistas populate the finest of private baseball photography collections. The image here measures 38x17", affixed to a heavy cardboard mount that adds about an inch to each edge. The photo has lifted slightly at the left side to no ill effect beyond perhaps a slight enhancement of the "silvering" that confirms advanced vintage. Otherwise scattered and fairly inconsequential age toning, and very minor edge chipping confined to the white borders, concludes the condition report. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
