1906 Chicago Cubs Oversized Photograph by Geo. Lawrence. Arresting photographic masterwork is unmistakably the art of noted lensman George Lawrence, whose documentation of turn-of-the-century Chicago baseball is considered its definitive visual record. It's one of two images offered within this auction (the other being the 1906 White Sox) that served its early life in a Chicago barbershop frequented by some of the players captured through Lawrence's skillful eye. Here we find the celebrated double play trio of Tinker, Evers and Chance, along with fellow Hall of Famer Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown, who stares into the camera at top left. The 12x16" image survives with a stunning absence of wear, appearing unchanged from its original state unless carefully examined at very close range, when a few tiny imperfections in the emulsion in the lower border area can be discerned. Our catalog imagery should indicate just how pristine a piece this is. For the devout Chicago Cubs fan, there can be few pieces more appealing, as this club won the 1906 National League pennant, and the World Series in 1907 and 1908, representing an era of dominance that the Windy City faithful have waited for over a century to return. The photo is matted and framed to a faithful vintage appearance befitting this remarkable image at final dimensions of 22x26".
