Description
1904 Fred Clarke Signed Photograph by Carl Horner, PSA/DNA Gem Mint 10. NOTE: The photo measures 5.5" x 7-7/8," the mount measures 6-3/4" x 9-3/4."Unquestionably one of the most extraordinary signed photographs ever to pass through the offices of Heritage Auctions, the presented representation supplies amazement in a number of ways. We'll begin with the image itself, highly collectible and valued in the thousands in its unsigned state. It's the unmistakable work of the Dead Ball Era's most collectible photographer, Carl Horner, whose images served as the source material for many of the early trading card issues, including the million dollar T206 of Clarke's teammate Honus Wagner. This image, in fact, is featured in reverse on the popular E104 Nadja Caramels entry for Clarke.
And while signed Horner images of any subject are all but non-existent, the same can be said of Clarke signed photos from any source, amplifying the appeal of this astoundingly rare find. In fact, not a single Fred Clarke signed photo appears in our database of all major auction results dating back to 1999. Finally, we turn to the black fountain pen inscription, a bona fide 10/10 application that reads "Compliments Fred C. Clarke, 3-5-04," dating to the earliest days of spring training following the Pirates' stunning defeat in the very first World Series. The only condition note comes in a recognition of some staining at the edges of the "Carl J. Horner" stamped mount which intrudes upon the image only in the blank area above Clarke's head.
The photo derives from the family of pitcher Homer Hillebrand, who won eight and lost four for the Bucs between 1905 and 1908. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, Gem Mint 10. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
