    From Cy Young's personal collection!

1896 Cleveland Spiders Team Composite Cabinet Photograph Signed by Cy Young. The term "political correctness" had yet to enter the American parlance at the time this remarkable relic was produced to celebrate the Spiders' forthcoming Temple Cup skirmish, but twelve decades is far too long to hold a grudge, no? We've never encountered another example of this undeniably hilarious creation that transforms every member of the team as a caricatured stereotype relating to his national heritage or personality.

Chief Zimmer is adorned with a feathered headdress and war paint. Bobby Wallace steps out of a Kabuki theater performance. George "Nig" Cuppy...well, you get the picture.

Cy Young, born of solid Scottish stock that served him well throughout 511 career victories, has the look of a bagpiper, and had just completed another masterful campaign that saw him lead the National League in shutouts (5) and strikeouts (140). But there would be no postseason joy, as the Spiders fell victim to the greatest powerhouse of the late 19th century--the Baltimore Orioles--in a four-game Temple Cup sweep.

Along with his personal Pifer & Becker cabinet photo likewise on offer within this Platinum Night event, Young signed this incredible early relic and mailed it to a friend some decades after the photos' original production. The original mailing envelope is included in the aforementioned lot, but we will supply a color copy of the envelope with this one.

The cabinet measures 7x8.5" in dimension with cracks at the right corners, as will be visible in our catalog and online imagery. But the overall aesthetics remain strong, and Young's fountain pen signature at the bottom border is unaffected by these concerns, rating a solid 8/10. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
