1889 Tom Brown (Boston NL) Cabinet Photograph. Scarce early cabinet pictures Boston Beaneaters outfielder Thomas Brown, who shared a dugout with such nineteenth century Hall of Famers as Dan Brouthers and Mike "King" Kelly during his two seasons of service to the club. Though not quite on the same elite level as these teammates, Brown was no fly-by-night figure either, representing a combination of American Association, National League and Players League squads for a career of seventeen seasons. He appears straight out of central casting for a Victorian age ballplayer, complete with laced-front jersey and mustache, captured in gorgeous sepia tones. The cabinet from "T. Waldon Smith" studios of Boston shows typical edge wear and minor corner chipping, and a two-inch tear arches toward Brown's face, but the central focus of the image is unimpaired by these concerns. Brown's name is written in an unknown hand in bold black ink at the lower border, and "Copyrighted 1889" is penned on verso. Size is 4.25x6.25". A highly collectible image from the infancy of Major League Baseball.
