1887 Detroit Wolverines Team Cabinet Photograph. Though this remarkable team photo is celebrating its 126th year of existence at the time of this writing, it actually became just a bit more valuable just this year when the Hall of Fame Veteran's Committee brought James Laurie "Deacon" White into the bronze brotherhood, bringing the tally of Cooperstown legends pictured to three. That's White sitting at the left shoulder of manager Bill Watkins, who wears a black suit at center. Standing second from the left is the immortal Dan Brouthers, with the influential manager-in-training Ned Hanlon touching his right knee to Watkins' left.

While this confluence of 19th century baseball royalty would be enough to establish this rarity as a treasure of the early game, we must remember that the 1887 Wolverines of the National League defeated the American Association's St. Louis Browns by a margin of ten games to five in a post-season precursor to the World Series, effectively becoming the first World Champions in Detroit baseball history.

This is the second Wolverines team cabinet from the Tomlinson photographic studio that we at Heritage have had the good fortune to handle, the former dating to the previous season but otherwise nearly identical in format. Here the sepia team shot retains marvelous contrast and condition, with just a small tear at the right shoulder of catcher Charlie Bennett to report. The mount that holds the 6x8.5" image reveals a greater degree of wear in the form of tack holes, edge chipping and some water staining, but this remains mercifully clear of the more important areas of the piece and must be forgiven in light of the rarity and geriatric vintage. Full dimensions are approximately 10x12".
