1871 Baseball Hand-Tinted Mounted Photograph. Magnificent hand-tinted studio photograph takes us back to the infancy of the organized game, when big-front uniforms and massive, thick-handled bats ruled the diamond. Ancient handwriting on verso reads, "Fred Silas Merrick - 18 yrs old," matching the identity of a Fredrick Silas Merrick born on June 30, 1853 in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, thereby supplying our lot title date.

The approximately 7.5x6" image appears in its original studio mount (10x8") from a New Brighton photographer named Henry Noss, noteworthy as the first professional photographer west of the Alleghenies, and the patriarch of one of the town's most prominent families. His hand-coloring is well beyond the standards of the day, which typically only added a bit of flesh tone to the subject(s). This special piece provides a thrilling full-color glimpse into the early game, as we have no doubt that the color choices were faithful to reality. Condition is marvelous, with a small corner chip and minor wear to the edge the only issues worthy of mention. An absolute treasure of the early game.
